Recycling proceeds from Hempstead Town beaches will now go to help fund the special-needs programs at Lido Beach’s Camp ANCHOR, officials said Thursday.
Town Supervisor Anthony Santino announced the funding Thursday at the Malibu Beach Club in Lido Beach, surrounded by participants in Camp ANCHOR, which stands for Answering the Needs of Citizens with Handicaps through Organized Recreation.
Town workers will collect bottles and cans from recycling bins on the beach at the Point Lookout Town Park, Lido Beach Town Park, Lido West Town Park, the Sands on Lido Beach, the Atlantic Beach Estates community, and East Atlantic Beach.
The material will be redeemed and the money donated to Camp ANCHOR, which serves about 900 year-round campers and 800 campers in a summer program. The town has operated and funded the camp since 1973, but the recycling proceeds will go to the separate nonprofit program fund for additional supplies.
“By taking time to dispose of your bottles and cans in one of our designated recycling bins, beach goers will be keeping our planet clean while supporting a group of special young people who are served by Camp ANCHOR,” Santino said.
Town officials do not have an estimate of how much money the recycling program will raise for the camp.
New disposal bins decorated by campers will be placed along the beach to encourage recycling. The decorated bins will have signs promoting funding to Camp ANCHOR.
Amy Makar and her son, Daniel, 41, who is enrolled at Camp ANCHOR, thanked Santino for the donations. Daniel called it “a good cause to save the planet for Camp ANCHOR.”
“Camp ANCHOR is a magical place,” Amy Makar said. “We thank the town for this opportunity for money raised for our programs.”
